Education: Better Late than Never

Attending secondary school in the Caribbean is very similar to high school in the United States; secondary schooling is equivalent to a 12th-grade high school education. When I reached Form 3 at Tranquillity Government Secondary school, which is Grade 8 in the USA, I had lost interest in school. My new focus was all about school popularity, having a strong interest in the opposite sex, sports and never really cared what I wanted to grow up to be in life.
Becoming popular seemed like one of my ultimate goals while attending high school. I was very content with being a class comedian; everybody else thought I was very hilarious. I thought I was cool because I could make other students laugh. It had reached a point; I was talking smack about other student’s parents. That had led me to quite a few visits to the Principal’s office and numerous parent/ teachers meetings. When I was given notes for my bad behavior to give to my folks, I would tear it up. I had a gotten a surprise of my life, when my folks showed up for a parent/ teacher conference, one of the notes I had torn up. The Principal had known my name by heart, and it wasn’t a good look when he knew it was me before going into his office.
As a teenager, I was beginning to find an interest in girls and began writing “love” notes to the girls that I thought were cute. Every night before I went to bed, I made sure my uniform was pressed and picked out a pair of shows that I wanted to wear for school. Not worrying about completing any homework, all I cared about was how good I was going to look for the girls. I wanted to fit in with the “cool kids” and impress the girls with how many brand name tennis shoes I wore.
I thought to skip classes with my friends was cool. I didn’t care about the consequences. That got me into a lot of trouble with my parents. And if I were in class, I would never pay attention or let the teacher know I didn’t understand the topic. I w...
