Dating and Physical Attractions

Psychologists have found that actual and perceived the similarity between potential romantic partners in demographics, attitudes, values, and attractiveness correlate positively with attraction and, later, relationship satisfaction. Online dating systems provide a new way for users to identify and communicate with potential partners, but the information they provide differs dramatically from what a person might glean from face-to-face interaction.
A popular dating application among college students today is “Tinder”. Tinder is promising the holy grail of dating; it tells a person that someone they find physically attractive reciprocates this feeling and likes their appearance too. This application allows users to scroll through pictures of singles in their area, swiping one way to say they are interested, and the other if not. If two users prove to be a match, then Tinder sets up a chat box. As is the case with many online dating sites, the first impression you get of someone is from his or her appearance. Studies have shown users of online dating seek attributes similar to one’s own, such as marital history and whether one wants children, but they also demonstrated significant homophily in self-reported physical build and physical attractiveness. Unfortunately, with Tinder there is no hope in messaging another user unless they also find you physically attractive. While Tinder may present an opportunity to users to meet potential partners that they would likely otherwise never have the chance to encounter, these interactions are constrained by whether or not the two individuals are mutually attracted to each other physically.
