No one wanted to challenge people with such high authority like Camp and Whitney. They would either be highly embarrassed or ridiculed. This happened with other sports as well, such as baseball and boxing. When it came to sports in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, the white race was definitely dominant.
As time move forward through the twentieth century, minorities started to threaten the white dominance in sports. Racial and ethnic identities were developed through participation in baseball and boxing. From the 1920s through the 1940s, Japanese Americans and Mexican Americans created their own leagues and clubs. They also participated in industrial teams. Working-class minorities made up the majority of prize-fighting participants and fans in Southern California. These minorities were particularly made up of Mexicans and Filipinos. Participation in boxing created an opportunity for Mexican Americans to build ethnic solidarity and gain visibility needed to help voice their economic and social problems. Mexican Americans also developed a place in baseball by the 1930s. This helped showcase their cultural pride, which countered racial and political oppression.
African Americans also made their stand in sports, which most people are aware about. At the turn of the twentieth century, there were short periods where African Americans were involved in organized sports. These sports included horse racing, bicycle racing, and professional baseball. These periods were followed by decades of segregation as a result of Jim Crow laws.
