Nursing: The Art of Caring

For me, there was no moment of divine intervention, no following the footsteps of an admired parent or relative, but rather a gradual realization that nursing would be the perfect career for me. I think my source of inspiration to become a nurse came from a natural desire to help people and care for them in times of need. According to Val Saintsbury, “Nurses dispense comfort, compassion, and caring without even a prescription.”
Before taking a nursing major in college, I talked to one of my cousins who is a successful nurse working at a well-known hospital and asked her that what it’s really like to be a nurse. She said, “Being a nurse is far more than a job or even a career. It's an adventure, a continuous learning process that we nurses embark on bravely each day, in search of life-changing events and miracles. I do not think that I am an angel. But my patients think so.” She added, “After a day long hectic shift, when I am exhausted and totally worn out, drained of my physical and mental resources and my patients are happy and satisfied and smiling at me, I easily forget all the fatigue and that moment pays off all my hard work.”
I wanted to know more about nurses, hospitals and the environment in which they work in. So in my summer vacations last year, I started volunteering at a hospital. I worked in different areas in the hospital including pediatrics, the emergency department and physical therapy. That volunteering experience taught me that nurses are the heart of healthcare. They lead very demanding and challenging lives. Working with doctors, healing patients, and educating the communities are just a few of the responsibilities of nurses. Sometimes being a nurse could be extremely exhausting. Emotional strength, physical endurance, communication skills and empathy for patients are some of the qualities required for nursing.
