?I’ve read a bunch of articles while surfing the internet, and I must admit that the views on British royal family are polarized in the extreme. Their devotion to the past is a common british stereotype. But nowadays if you describe a britishman as quaint or stuck in the past or conservative it would sound rather offensive implying not good connotation. Yes, they are very reluctant to change, but still they do. And the current tendency is that there is growing republican movement in Britain. But it must be mentioned that this movement is small in its number and they behave in a peaceful way, they are not going to raise a revolution and of course to make terrorist attacks, they are just other-way-thinkers and that’s all. So for the royal family there is no ground for anxiety.
But still monarchy is a contradictory issue. There are a lot of pros and cons to think over and to debate. And the first opinion is that Britons tired of being portrayed as royalty-obsessed traditionalists. Secondly, it is really very costly for a taxpayer to fund their living. The Royal family aren’t elected, which can be seen as undemocratic and it helps to perpetuate social inequality. Having a monarchy only highlights the gap between rich and poor in this country. They inherit their status and Britons are nowadays so heavy on encouraging democracy so that it may be seen as hypocritical. How can a liberal democracy justify power and privilege based on an accident of birth? Talking about inequality the primogeniture law and religious restrictions must be highlighted. The succession to the monarchy puts sons before daughters and a member of the royal family isn’t allowed to marry a Catholic which is viewed by republicans as primitive. Many people think that just because they’ve had a royal family for so many generations doesn’t mean it’s still relevant today; there was a time when things worked without royal families.
