Technology in the Malaysian Classroom

In this 21st century, technology is becoming vital in every aspects of life as it helps to simplify things such as education. Education has evolved in line with the era of globalisation which has a major impact on the whole wide world. Hence, teachers from all over the world are expected to utilize technology meaningfully in their classroom as technology brings many advantages towards the creativity and improvement of the students achievement. Over the past decade, Ministry of Education in Malaysia has spent more than six billion for the integration of technology as one of initiatives to catalyst the improvement of education in Malaysia such as Smart School Project. (Pelan Pembangunan Pendidikan Malaysia 2013-2025, 2013). Smart School project is one of the educational reform in order to support the national innovation on the technology integration. By the year 2010, all the 10 000 schools in Malaysia are to be Smart Schools, whereby the use of computers would be incorporated in the classroom process thus changing both the roles of 450 000 teachers and learners (The Malaysian Smart School Blueprint, 1997). It is because, for the past few years, educational researchers and public have been concerned about the slow adoption of modern technologies in education.
Even though, there is a lot of provisions provided by the government in order to transform the educational system, the utilization of technology in the Malaysian classroom has been less than successful. Based on the statistic made by Ministry of Education Malaysia in 2010, there is approximately 80% of teachers practice ICT for less than one hour weekly. This essay will consider a number of barriers which are the readiness of the teachers to utilize technology, lacking of facilities and the time constraints that prevent the teachers to utilize the technology in the classroom.
