My adaptive challenge is to change the culture within my sorority. This challenge stems from my personal adaptive challenge I was working on earlier this semester. Over the years, I’ve felt that a lack of respect to others has been increasing within the house. The women in the chapter are caring less about what our reputation is on campus and losing sight of the overall purpose of our organization. To make a positive effect on this culture will require a lot of diagnostic work to better understand why this happening and what needs to be done to make an effective change.
Within this adaptive challenge there are many technical and adaptive elements. The main technical challenge that I’ve come across is implementing rules. Since the overall goal of my challenge is to change the mindset of members throughout the chapter. There are countless adaptive elements that I’ve encountered already. These adaptive elements are much harder to find a solution for. The main adaptive elements I’ve faced are the lack of respect between members, a sense of entitlement member, and a loss of purpose within the house. These elements are on going and have been major hurdles within the challenge.
Success for this challenge is hard to measure. The overall goal would be member satisfaction within the chapter. Our entire chapter took an anonymous survey three weeks ago. In this survey members were asked to rank their overall satisfaction within the house, if the felt respected, if they believed members lived up to the chapters core values, and if they were comfortable in the house. Many were shocked when we revealed the results at chapter the following week. Multiple women shared their concerns and were honest about how their experience in the sorority so far. Although most were positive, there was a significant percentage that expressed their complete dissatisfaction with their experience.
