Charter Schools and the Future of Education

schools all have their own charter to operate independently outside the local school district so each charter school has more freedom to make decisions about how to spend money and serve students. Charter schools are supposed to be accountable if they don't meet certain standards they can have their charter revoked been shut down.
Some people believe that charter schools are inherently bad because not ALL of them are successful. According to a study done by The Phi Delta Kappan in 2010 there had been nearly 500 charter school closures between 2004 and 2009 (and about 2000 were opened during this time) which shows the sign of an effective marketplace. This system rewards the good schools and punishes the bad ones to a much greater extent than in the traditional public education system (Toch, 2010). This idea of finding and implementing the successful charter schools can also be seen in Geoffrey Canada’s Ted Talk (2013) he states his thesis by saying, “You know, people tell me, "Yeah, those charter schools, a lot of them don't work." A lot of them don't. They should be closed. I mean, I really believe they should be closed. But we can't confuse figuring out the science and things not working with we shouldn't therefore do anything. Right? Because that's not the way the world works.” Canada’s main point in his speech was to explain to his audience of educators, and well educated people that just because not all the charter schools are top tier performing schools that doesn’t mean that people should give up on the idea of trying to change education all together. Dr. Canada is a credible source due to his background in the field of education, receiving his degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Education he went on to his pioneering work of helping children and families in Harlem, and as a thought leader and passionate advocate for education reform.
