This learning has opened my eyes to the real history of Australia. It made me realised how little do I know about Australia’s First Peoples. History and past policies affected the life and health of the First Peoples. The past policies made the First Peoples powerless, humiliated and discriminated. The loss of the First Peoples “Kahini” during colonisation was detrimental to Australia’s First Peoples’ social, emotional, psychological well-being. The policies gave the government rights to steal the First Peoples’ land, family, community, and spirit. Advocacy is the capability that made an impact throughout my learning. As a nurse, I have the most contact with the patients which will give me the opportunity to educate and empower my patients. To be able to advocate for the First Peoples, I need to be aware of own cultural beliefs and values, to acknowledge, and respect Australia’s First Peoples’ culture. This course has open the door of opportunity to have a better understanding why the First Peoples health is so poor compared to non-indigenous Australian. Advocacy can empower the First Peoples because when people are presented with appropriate information about their health or illness, it will enable them to take charge of their health.











Part B: Critical Reflective essay
Assessing the patient’s medical and family history is part of the nursing process. Learning the patient’s history could help understand the underlying cause of their health issue. Research has shown that Australia’s First Peoples’ health problem is related to their past history and political events (Sherwood, 2013).
