Canadian Aid for America After 9/11

Abstract
On September 11, 2001, a catastrophe took place in New York, United States. Four commercial airliners were hijacked and crashed into buildings in New York. The attacks claimed almost 3,000 innocent lives. In December, Al Qaeda claimed responsibility for the attacks. Immediately following the attacks, Canada quickly provided aid and support to the United States of America. Canada’s response to 9/11 was appropriate because not only did we provide aid to the US, we also reduced and controlled the threat of terrorism.

Background Context
When talking about 9/11, another historical incident comes to mind. Pearl Harbor was another example of an organised attack in history. Although Pearl Harbor was much more strategically planned, the two attacks have a lot in similar. After both attacks, the victims were left in shock and fear and they followed up with subsequent attacks against the perpetrators1. After Pearl Harbor, the United States of America got involved in World War II. And after 9/11, the US proceeded to launch a military campaign against terrorism in Afghanistan. Both cases resulted in a large rebuttal from the victims.
The attacks had major consequences on the victims as well as perpetrators. 9/11 left the United States as a torn nation. And as a result of this, the citizens resorted to racism and violence towards certain racial groups. Suddenly there was a “War of Ideas”2 between extremist groups in the Middle East and the western Muslim communities. After Pearl Harbor, cruel stereotypes were thrown at the Japanese. And in Canada, Japanese – Canadians were put in internment camps and segregated from society. Although Muslims were not placed in internment camps, they were targeted by society. Another similarity between the two attacks is the lack of action despite the intelligence present. In both situations, the prominent intelligence agency had information suggesting that an attack was imminent. But in both case...
