William Shakespeare is one of the most famous poets and playwrights in history. He wrote 34 plays and over 150 sonnets. Romeo and Juliet is one of his best-known plays, written in 1593-1596 set in Verona. His plays are still performed in theaters and made into movies today. Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet depicts the lives of two lovers, their personalities, attitudes, and emotions mimic those of teenagers today. These three themes in the play are as relevant today as they were in the 16th century; Love, impulsivity, and society norms.

BODY 1
THEME #1: LOVE
Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet is a tragic love story that everyone can relate to. Teenagers have been falling in love since the dawn and recognize themselves in the young lovers because they relate to the characters’ feelings and understand the difficulties they face with their parents and society. Romeo’s love for Juliet is portrayed as very impulsive and strong: ‘‘Did my heart love till now? Forswear it, sight! For ne’er saw true beauty till this night.’’(I, V, 50-51) This is the first turning point of the play, and Romeo and Juliet’s fate is determined. From this moment on, Shakespeare’s figurative language escalates as the story of the star-crossed lovers develops to its tragic end. The whole world relates to the theme of love in this play, because everyone will experience love and heartbreak. But more so teenagers because they are starting to experience all these things, whereas their parents have all that in the past.
BODY 2
THEME #2: IMPULSIVITY
Romeo and Juliet shows the impulsivity of love and youth in Shakespeare’s era, but teens today would relate to that as much as ever. Romeo moves from Rosaline to Juliet in the blink of an eye, simply forgetting about his earlier crush. “With Rosaline, my ghostly father? No. I have forgotten that name’s woe.” (II, III, 45-46) Exclaims Romeo when the friar, whom he hopes will marry him to Julie...
