Jessie Pope, Rupert Brooke and Wilfred Owen are poets from The Great War and their poems are an interpretation of their antithetical lives which enable present and future generations to build a greater understanding of the conflicting zeitgeist during World War I. Jessie Pope wrote most of her poetry in a vital time prior to World War I where stereotypes and propaganda were used in order to recruit young men to the war. Pope’s jingoistic opinion of her culture is prominent throughout her controversial poetry which acted as advocacy and ultimately embodied current views of war being glorified. Rupert Brooke epitomises the mentality of the soldiers before their departure to war where the nationalistic view of sacrificing personal lifestyle and inevitably their mortality is depicted throughout his poetry. Furthermore, World War I saw an unprecedented quota of individuals question the current ideologies and dogma of the patriotic society which is reflected in a number of works by poets who were soldiers that fought on the front lines. Wilfred Owen was a soldier in World War I and wrote his poems in conjunction to fighting which ultimately manifests the personal experience of all soldiers captured by the inevitable horrors of warfare within his poetry. As a result World War I created conflicting views of patriotism during the course of the war and saw society question whether sacrificing life to earn honour and heroism in the eyes of others is justifiable in order to achieve merit and fulfilment of national pride.
