?There were multiple complicated and intertwined factors caused the French Revolution of 1789. The revolution involved numerous violent events and public enthusiasm towards the overthrowing of the monarchy and the setting up of the National Assembly, which changed the political landscape of France. There are several interlinked issues that will be discussed as causes of these events and the revolution. Long term inequality, economic problems, irresponsible government and philosophy are the major topics that influenced the public to rebel and fight for revolution. Crucial events before the revolution also influenced the coming of the French Revolution.
To begin with, the long-term inequality of wealth and privileges had a major influence on the anger of the people in the lower classes and therefore on the revolution. In the 18th century, France was a feudal country with class divisions. People were divided into three estates. The first estate was the clergy, the second was the nobles and the third estate contained the bourgeoisie, the city workers and mainly the peasants. Although there were different levels of wealth in the third estate, it was mainly made up of peasants with not much money. The nobles and the clergy hardly paid any tax and the Church owned one tenth of the land in France without paying taxes. The third estate, although the poorest, were victims of the heavy taxation. Some of the taxes that the Clergy and the nobles were exempt from include Taille (direct land tax), Gabelle (salt tax) and the Vingtieme (a onetime tax to ease the state deficit in the French budget), because of this, in the third estate there were many people living in poverty.
