“You take a four-year state college, with a broader range of admission, and what happens during those four years may be an even greater value-added educational experience” (Romer, 2010). The idea that admission departments are creating limitations or restraints towards the enrollment capacity will not allow one to see the full idea in the statement by Romer. The hardest part of a Vice President of Admissions job is pushing away students that are trying to further their education. As a result of budget cuts that most four-year public institutions are facing, these are the common actions taken by individuals in these positions. Since this position focuses on the betterment of the potential student, they are forced to create ways to provide high quality opportunities for the students with a decreased budget each year.
In the article Top 10 Higher Education State Policy Issues for 2010, the AASCU State Relations and Policy Analysis Research Team stated that enrollment numbers in four-year public colleges and universities are seeing record high numbers. As part of one’s role as Vice President of Admissions, one focus of this position is describes as implements innovative admission and recruiting processes relative to first year, transfer, international, early entrant, veteran, non-traditional/adult, reciprocal, and special student recruitment (higheredjobs.com).With the idea that our role is to implement a recruiting process that will attract students apply to our institution, it seems contrary to rejecting them once a certain level in enrollment numbers is achieved. The negative impact this could arise for potential students once others voice opinion how their experience can cause some problems with future recruiting efforts. An article in the New York Times written by Karen Arenson in 2008 discusses the increase rates in applicants that will result in a high number of rejections to the students.
