The Miracles of Jesus

10 Pages 2487 Words September 2016

Introduction
The English word "miracle" normally denotes a supernatural event, that is, an event which so transcends ordinary happenings that it is viewed as a direct result of supernatural power (Green et al., 1992). Jesus worked many miracles over the course of his ministry. The Gospels reference more than 30 of such events but this is only a fraction of his actual miracles during his life on earth. Jesus’ miracles can be grouped into healing, exorcisms, power over nature as well as power over death. This paper will review some of His miracles in the context of the previously noted categories.

Healings
The first miracle I will review is the healing the Centurion’s servant. This miracle is found in the Gospels of Matthew (Matthew 8:5–13 NIV) and Luke (Luke 7:1–10 NIV). In both Gospels the event occurs in the town of Capernaum, after Jesus has given the Sermon on the Mount. Some suggest that the accounts in Matthew and Luke are actually two unique miracles (France, 1987, p.154), however, I will consider this the same event. As Jesus enters Capernaum “There is a centurion’s servant, whom his master valued highly, was sick and about to die” (Luke 7-2 NIV). The Centurion does not think it is appropriate for him to ask for Jesus’ help and reaches out to elders to speak with Jesus on his behalf. He is respected amongst the elders who plead his case. Once Jesus received this endorsement by the elders, he set out to the man’s house. The Centurion – a gentile, however still does not believe he is worthy to accept Jesus into his home and sends a messenger. “When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith” (Matthew 8:10 NIV). The Centurion demonstrated his faith in Jesus and thus Jesus exhibits his power of healing by curing the servant “remotely”.
