discuss the healing a man with Leprosy. In this example Jesus heals a man with a specific illness, and illness that would make the infected ceremonially unclean (Ryken et al., 2000). Jesus appeared to be annoyed or indignant with this man but yet still healed him. All that Jesus asked was that he not tell anyone about His involvement, “See that you don’t tell this to anyone” (Mark 1-44 NIV). Unfortunately, the man could not keep this under wraps and told everyone. Jesus’s healing power is again on display with this deed. He also shows a part of his human nature in this case. For one reason or another he did not want to deal with a large crowd in this circumstance. It is sometimes easy to forget that Jesus was still a man.
Keeping with the theme of leprosy, later in Luke (Luke 17:11-19 NIV) Jesus heals not just one leper this time but ten. Unlike the previous account of the healing leprosy, this time Jesus does not make any demand indicating not to tell anyone. At least one of the ten was a gentle, “He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him-and he was a Samaritan” (Luke 17:16 NIV). This is another instance where Jesus displays that anyone who believes in Him will be accepted into his kingdom. Jesus also again heals without physically touching the ten as was the case with the Centurion’s servant.
Luke (Luke 14:1-6 NIV) details another controversial healing performed by Jesus. As previously noted, Jesus interactions with lepers was counter-cultural during his era on earth. The account of the healing of the man with dropsy on the Sabbath would have been seen as extremely provocative. He challenged the religious authorities by asking “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?” (Luke 14:3 NIV). Jesus again healed a man of an incurable and dangerous disease in the ancient world.
