The topic of sex and the distribution of condoms in public schools has caused much controversy and heated debates in this country. While some people are in favor of the distribution of condoms because it ensures teens will practice safe sex and will decline pregnancy rates, many believe that this will only encourage sexual activity. The National Coalition to Support Sexuality Education states that more than 50% of American teenagers been sexually active in some way. Research shows that every year, over a million teenagers become pregnant at, one in seven teenagers contract an STD, and one in five hundred students on college campuses are infected with hiv and aids. So my questions is after knowing these statistics these facts shouldn’t there be a need for condom distribution in schools.
My answer is of course because the safety of teenagers is imperative not only school but for us as a society. Sex in our society is so taboo, and it’s a very touchy and personnel subject. We know that sex is needed so much the Maslow and Freud said it was a necessity for human beings. We know everyone has it even our parents even when we try not to think about those awkward visions. We turn on the tv and are bombarded with subliminal messages from cartoons, sex on our favorite reality shows, etc.
Parents wants their children to focus on education and enjoying the precious years of adolescents. Ideally, parents would like there child be absinthe and wait to have sex into marriage. Yet we can’t be naive, and allow life changing events such as disease or teen pregnancy plague the youth. Distributing condoms won’t increase sexual activity any more than the rates of those that never used them. The teens and adolescents that are sexually active will continue to be sexually active. I consider condoms to be the inconvenient truth that parents don’t want to address.
