The Roman Empire was an extremely successful empire ruling during the years of 753 BC to around 1461 AD. Although ancient, the Romans had many bright ideas and forward-thinking notions. In fact, many of their ideas still exist in our culture today. Many fail to realize how much our government, lifestyle, entertainment; even architecture was influenced by the ways of the ancient Romans. Although the Romans thrived in Europe and we prosper here in America, the Roman notions and inventions have adapted here quite nicely. Nestled in the most unexpected of places are bursts of Roman influence and design. Common household games to the way we construct our buildings, the ideas behind them are not our own. As we examine these things, it is important to realize how greatly the Romans have affected us and how advanced their thinking really was.
Roman architecture is one of the most incredible things to see today. Not only can you see it in the buildings and roads the Roman’s built long ago, but also the Roman influence in the architecture designs we have today. The Romans were most famous for coming up with designs for the aqueducts, the “arch”, bridges, domes, and columns. Most of the structures the Romans built are still used today, such as their bridges, roads, The Puente Alcantara in Spain, Arc de Triomphe, and whole empires! The Roman columns are probably the most widely used Roman design in the United States. There are three types of columns that are mainly used, Doric stage, Ionic Style, and Corinthian Type. These columns can be seen on court houses, such as the Supreme Court Building built in 1935 by Cass Gilbert. If you visit Washington D.C., you might notice a lot of Roman influence can be seen there in the buildings.
