A Sociological Observation

The place that I went and did my sociological observation was the game room located in the student center here at Catawba College. When I first entered the game room it was quite and just a 4 people in their eating in a group. After they ate they started playing a game of pool. But someone had already called next to play on the table. This is an informal rule in the game room made by the society and students because the college does not have that rule posted in the game room. Just like in the reading about the toy stores where employees had formal rules, which are rules made by the corporation or boss and in this reading it talked about how the employees had informal rules, which are things that employees come up with.
Then I observed more people come into the game room and they were starting to play Ping-Pong. Then one of them asked me do I want to play instead, so I said sure. Before we started playing he said “if you when I’ll by you something from the grill area and that changed my mindset and behavior and made me play more serious because there was free food on the line. That’s an example of symbolic interactionism, ways to influence people’s behavior. And I did win and he bought my food. Then I sat down and continued to observe behavior in the game room and I noticed two males arguing over who was up next to play pool and then I thought this could deal with conflict theory. Conflict theory is society composed of self-interested groups competing for scarce resources. That is what they were doing arguing, basically competing to see who was going to play.
Then I moved into the grill area beside the game room an did some more observing and I saw two girls about to order food but one of the girls didn’t have money on her card but the girl behind her saw that and bought her food for her even though they were strangers, This is an example of where deviance can be a positive thing.
