Newspapers - The Tribune and Nassau Guardian

Newspapers are publications that are issued often, mostly daily. They provide information to the public on current events in a particular country. Newspapers are one of the oldest methods of getting news around, and it still serves that very important function today. According to Reference.com, “Newspapers provide an outlet for large teams of reporters to report media that may be overlooked by major television or online news stations.” For this reason, both The Tribune and The Nassau Guardian remain very important sources of information in The Bahamas. The Nassau Guardian, founded in 1844, is oldest and one of the most successful newspapers in the country. The Tribune, which is also a very large newspaper in the Bahamas, followed just 59 years later in 1903 and grew to be the largest newspaper in the country. Both The Nassau Guardian and The Tribune are papers that interpret, entertain and provide factual information to the public, but the difference lies in the way in which information is posted on the front page, their articles, the information they contain and the audience they attract.
The way in which information is posted on the front page of a newspaper is a direct determinant of how well the paper will be sold. According to Holmqvist Kenneth, et al, the main entry points of a newspaper are pictures and graphics, followed by the promotion boxes (660). They stress the importance of designing the newspaper layout so that it quickly leads the reader to the information that the designer wants to emphasize. The front page of the Tribune and the front page of the Nassau Guardian are different in terms of positioning of information. Information is placed from left to right on the Nassau Guardian and from right to left on the Tribune.
