The Differences Between Anime and Cartoons

Nowadays, lots of people don't know the difference between anime and regular cartoons. When they see somebody watching anime, or they hear about it somehow, they say that a person is watching a regular cartoon and hence he or she is being childish. People who know that anime and cartoon both use traditional animation production processes, are misunderstandings. In fact, although anime and cartoons both use traditional animation production processes, there are still several big differences between them which means anime is made for a mature audience.
Anime scenes place an emphasis on achieving three-dimensional views. Cartoon is just a two-dimensional views. Anime use the three-dimensional views usually for the magnificent visual properties such as a scene that portrays dancing. According to New York Times, “It is also a work of astounding formal beauty, in which elaborate, computer-generated backgrounds merge seamlessly with the vigorous, hand-drawn animation of the foreground characters” (Kehr, 2002). As a result, anime looks closer to reality, but cartoons are more abstract. As you know, most of the anime characters have big eyes and small mouths. Although they look more cute or more beautiful, they are still human. Cartoons are different; they look more abstract. For example, SpongeBob SquarePants, the main character of SpongeBob SquarePants, is an abstract character of cartoon because he lives in the ocean and not a real human. In summary, anime and cartoon are different on visual characteristics which results in anime characters being more real.
In addition, anime and cartoons are different because of genre. Kehr claim that “Anime is not a genre in itself, but a style that can be applied to a wide variety of subject matter” (2002).
