The Saving Place by Michael Dowdy is a formal poem, with deep meaning. Michael Dowdy lives in Hickory, North Carolina where he also grew up around. When you read this poem it touches you in some way, everyone has someone they really care for lost in an addiction. Addiction isn’t only drugs and alcohol, addiction can be gambling, fighting, or even eating strange things. We have all tried to save someone from their habits, but nine out of ten times they fall right back into that addiction. The most touching part of this poem is the fact he actually wrote this poem about his sister, who was killed by a siller killer back in the earlier 2000s. Throughout the poem he talks about his sister being an addict and not being able to save her. This poem is by far my favorite out of all the others I’ve read from Mr. Dowdy.
The first stanza talks about him digging an actual hole right on top of his grandmother's grave. “I’ll do it, damn it” is the first line in the poem stating he finally agreed to dig up that hole to place his sister's ashes in. He digs with his bare hands with only a spade. As I picture this, it seems like a very harsh moment for them. It is very expensive when it comes to a death, so them having to dig a hole shows there is a struggle. Which is actually illegal, but at that moment all they care for is to have that loved one resting in peace.
While he is digging up that hole, he is thinking about all those lost souls. The one lost soul he couldn’t save, his sister. I felt the pain in this stanza, that moment when you realize there isn’t anything you could do to save someone is probably the worst feeling ever.
