The number of people addicted cigarettes increases considerably year by year all over the world despite thousands of programs to reduce youth smoking and hundreds of thousands of media stories on the dangers of tobacco use. Hence, knowing what terrible effects smoking causes is extremely vital. It concludes some main severe risks such as harms to health, effects to people around, and waste of money.
The harm of smoking on the body of a person is enormous. For example, it causes cancer, affects vision, damages your breathing and scars your lung. Moreover, the chemicals in tobacco smoke harm your blood cells and damage the function of your heart, so smoking can easily make a body weak, and cause a slow and steady death. Especially, scientists warned that smoking a cigarette causes a loss of 5.5 minutes of life expectancy. There are many facts related to smoking and deaths. For instance, according to Action on Smoking and Health (ASH), one person dies every 6 seconds from tobacco-related diseases. That means there are ten people died per a minute. In addition, the data US Department of Health and Human Service (HHS) show that more than 20 million Americans have died because of smoking since 1964, and 8.6 million people live with a serious illness caused by smoking. Furthermore, the Ho Chi Minh City Health Education and Communication Center warned that nearly 10 percent of the Vietnamese population would have died from smoking-related diseases if no measure is taken.
Another awful consequence is effects to people around. According to WHO, Vietnam is one of the countries where smoking in public places are popular affecting the health of non-smokers who are exposed to second-hand smokers. To non-smokers, breathing the air from smokers is terrifying because they only take bad smoke from them. They even get higher rate of diseases from smoke.
