Shakespeare Wanted The Taming of The Shrew To Be A Commentary On The Faults Of Male Domination
In today’s world, male dominance is everywhere. From voting to freedom, male dominance has existed for thousands of years. Today, women have more rights and more freedom than ever before. But still, women struggle to live with freedom and security throughout the world. One example is wages. In the United States, some women report that they get paid less than their male co-workers. This shows one example of male dominance today. The Taming of The Shrew displays many different examples of male dominance and it exemplifies the faults of it as well. Shakespeare wanted The Taming of The Shrew to be a commentary on the faults of male domination.
In The Taming of The Shrew, there are many examples of male dominance. One scene at the wedding included this quote from Katherine, “Thy husband is thy lord, thy life, thy keeper, thy head” (5.2.219). Katherine practically worships her husband and she thinks herself under him. This shows how Petruchio’s authority dominates most of Katherine’s life. Shakespeare shows the faults of male dominance by showing how Katherine worships her husband. Women are not supposed to worship their husbands for they are like any other human being. Another scene where Shakespeare shows faults of male dominance is when Petruchio, starves Katherine in order to tame her. “Tis passing good: I prithee let me have it” (5.2.219). Then Grumio says “I fear it is too choleric a meat” (5.2.219). Grumio, makes more and more excuses to starve Katherine. Petruchio tames Katherine like a falcon. He starves and starves her until she is finally under his control. In the end, Petruchio’s authority over Katherine shows his dominance over her, which Shakespeare shows is a fault.
