“To care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan." This is the mission statement in which the organization stands by. This was a promise from President Lincoln towards honoring the men and women who are America’s Veterans. The Veterans Affairs is a customer service organization. The main goal is to serve Veterans. Veterans are individuals who have served in one of the seven uniformed services who meet the length of service and character of discharge requirements prescribed by law. This includes the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard, Public Health Service, and Commissioned Officer Corps of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The life of the typical Veteran is characterized by time recovering from traumatized experiences that aid from the VA could not recover.
It was in the 1960s that the Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony and Pequot Indians were at war. With roots dating back from 1636, the United States established assistance that would cater the needs of our disabled veterans. A law that stated that disabled soldiers would be supported by the colony was established shortly after the war. The federal government authorized the first domiciliary and medical facility for Veterans in 1811. Following the 19th century, the nation's Veterans Assistance Program was expanded to include benefits and pensions not only for Veterans, but also for their widows and dependents. Homes were established in many states for sheltering purposes. Care was available near these Veterans homes. Incidental medical and hospital treatment were provided for all injuries and diseases resulting from the various wars. This includes disabled Veterans of the Civil War, Indian Wars, Spanish-American War, and Mexican Border period.
