It will be the object of this report to discuss the beginning of territorial segregation of colored Africans in South Africa. I will be analyzing the laws of apartheid as well as the negative impact and consequences. Through much confidence and research, it is my hope to successfully write a report that uncovers the systemic prejudice and discrimination that many colored South Africans experienced throughout this period.
One of the main political principles publicized by the National Party from 1948 to 1994 was the policy of apartheid, when translated from Afrikaans it means "separateness." Through many opinions, it is believed that the National Party felt threatened by the huge population of native Africans and wanted to reinforce laws to regulate and control their actions. Initially, the intention of apartheid laws were introduced to strengthen control over the economic and social system in South Africa, also to enforce white domination while implementing racial segregation. This meant that the South African government classified the citizens of South Africa into four racial groups, namely Blacks, Coloreds (mixed race), Indians, and Whites.
Race laws affected every aspect of social life for segregated citizens. For example, not only was marriage prohibited between whites and non-whites, but also the Immorality Act made it illegal for any sexual contact between coloreds and non-coloreds. In addition, the government established many policies such as isolating services for whites and non-whites, classifying certain jobs for whites only, as well as denying colored citizen’s participation in national government.
A standout amongst the most destroying parts of the politically-sanctioned racial segregation, the legislature removed Colored South Africans from rural areas and sold their territory at low costs to white farmers.
