With the news of the Japanese lead invasion of Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941, Canadians had a great fear of the Japanese in British Columbia. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Masajiro Miyazaki, who emigrated from Japan worked as a surgeon. He was a loyal citizen of Canada but he was interned due to his Japanese descendant. Thousands of Japanese-Canadians have similar stories to those of Masajiro Miyazaki. Ian Mackenzie, the federal cabinet minister from British Columbia demanded the federal government, “to get these people out of B.C. as fast as possible.” This action by the Ian Mackenzie and the Canadian government to intern Japanese-Canadians was not justified and was an exploit of power because Japanese-Canadians were interned due to their race, treated like prisoners of war, and given inadequate compensation by the Canadian government after admitting to be iniquitous.
The Canadian government had interned Japanese-Canadians because of their race and relation to Japan. This was a profoundly racist action by the Canadian government and represents a sense of hatred towards the Japanese-Canadians. The government did not have enough evidence of Japanese-Canadians hostility towards Canada but they still took the path of racism and prejudice towards the Japanese living in Canada. To prove, the government claimed the Japanese were being removed for “national security”, but the RCMP, the federal level police and the military stated that the Japanese posed no threat to Canada’s security. To explain, the Japanese-Canadians were interned because the government was fearful that they would do something, though the Japanese-Canadians did not commit a crime or show signs of aggression in Canada. This type of internment is a sense of pure hatred, racism and prejudice towards an ethnic, cultural or religious group.
