The way people are raised and how they grow up can shapes how people mature and who they are as a person. Some can either take hardships from their past and create meaning out of them or le the tough times hold them back. Fannie Lou Hamer was one who took her life and changed it around, bettering herself and others. Many individuals have a hard time standing up for themselves and what they believe in. Fannie Lou Hamer was an exceptional woman who was strong and courageous. She stood up for what she thought to be right, regardless of the situation. It did not matter who she helped as long as she achieved a positive outcome from what she did for them. Fannie Lou Hamer pushed for African American voting rights; inspiring a change in racial equality in the United States.
Fannie Lou Hamer was born on October 6th in 1917, she was deprived of many if not all luxuries that many Americans had handed to them at the time. Life under the sharecropper system was completely unjust, only making Fannie the woman she became later in life. The sharecropper system kept white Americans stable in the economy and kept blacks poor. Her family struggles time after time to remain out of poverty and had to work hard labor jobs in the fields.When her father was finally able to work for the family out of abject poverty, an envious white neighbor poisoned the Townsend mules and cows simply killing all their sources of money and food. Living in Mississippi, seventy percent of blacks were still disenfranchised, they were said to be at best second class citizens. Life wasn’t worth living at some points in time, Fannie married Perry Hammer and adopted two children. She went through the struggle of having to watch her children die of poverty.
Life turned for the better in 1962 when she met the leaders of the organizations known as the Students Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Ideas of standing up for her kind and began...
