A career in law enforcement can be one of the most stressful positions there is. A police officer faces danger every day, they are on constant alert and meet criminals who are violent and aggressive. Sometimes, a police officer needs to make critical decisions, which could greatly affect someone's life, including their own. It is understandable, that law enforcement personnel are under extreme stress, and that there may be negative consequences from this stress. It is very critical how a police officer handles their stress, and how their supervisor's respond to them.
When one considers the job of a law enforcement position, they need to keep in mind the amount of stress that goes along with the job. A law enforcement officers never know what they might encounter around the next corner as they walk or drive while on patrol. They meet people who are armed and danger and wanted to injure or kill the officer or other individuals. Law enforcement is continuously under pressure and is expected to function. The public is very condemnatory, and keep to high standards for the way officers should act and how successful they should be in conducting their jobs. On top of the pressure from their jobs. The police officer should not take their work home never with them and have their personal life, whether it be a family or just on their own. It also matters how a law enforcement agent handles their stress. Some officers turn to alcohol, drugs, suicide, or other negative and harmful behaviors. It is also especially important that the supervisors or management personnel guide their employees on how to correctly deal with stress. These supervisors need to make sure they identify the signs of an officer dealing with stress in a negative way, that way they can act swiftly in help the officer deal with it. Each supervisor is an obligation to assist any individuals below them that they need to look out and their supervisor would be responsible for them.
