Officers have many stressors in their daily activities, more than the public may realize. On a Police Stress Survey conducted at the NYPD, officers ranked the stressors that they deal with every day. Some of the highest rated stressors include killing someone in the line of duty, when a fellow officer is killed, if they were physically attacked, handing a case with a battered child involved, and high-speed chases. Some of the lower rated stressors include boredom, minor physical injuries, racial conflicts, promotions, and demands for high morality (Violanti & Aron, 1995). This survey shows that officers not only have stress resulting from their duties, but also from empathy from other officers' injuries and victims in their cases. The number one common stressor among officers is killing someone else. Sometimes, these people can be criminals, it could happen accidentally, a product of self-defense, or to prevent the person from harming others.
