Comparing Vocational and Traditional Colleges

Making a choice between attending a four-year university and a vocational school can be brain-racking. According to the web page “Wisegeek.com” the brain is only about 2% of a person’s body mass but requires about 20% of its oxygen and calories. When it comes to making that big decision, you should not waste your time listening to all the negative opinions that have no value for the career path that you have chosen. Sarah Santiago was in second grade when her family emigrated to U. S. from El Salvador. Her family lives in a three-bedroom apartment, but they are saving up for a down payment to purchase a house in the near future. She is very close to her family with a sense of responsibility to them because she is the oldest of five children. Sarah contributes money to the household working part time as a clerk typist. Sarah Santiago has a dilemma about which educational path to pursue for her future. She is torn among the wishes of her family, friends, and her boss all of whom want her to do something different. Sarah’s choices are either she can attend a four-year university or she can stay in town and attend a vocational school. Although Sarah has several choices of schools I believe the best choice for Sarah is to attend a four-year university because she would have many career and scholarship opportunities.
The most compelling reason Sarah should attend a four-year university is because a higher education would open up many great career opportunities. While local vocational schools boast in their advertisements that they assist in job placement, this is usually limited to resume assistance and job interview pointers only. Sarah would be much wiser to attend a university of her liking versus a vocational school. According to ProCon.org, college graduates make more money and have more and better employment opportunities compared to a high school graduate, associate degree holder, and most vocational graduates.
