Unstoppable by Bill Nye

A flaming world filled with intolerable heat. Dried up lakes with no suitable environment for any species. What world is this? Is this real? Bill Nye is a renowned scientist and well-known for his show, “Bill Nye the Science Guy.” He is also the author of a wonderful book, Unstoppable: Harnessing Science to Change the World. This book shows how to solve world problems like global warming, as in the scenario above, using science. Fascinating stories, facts, and humor will captivate the reader and leave them with an ocean of information to change the world and make us “unstoppable”.
Bill Nye’s unique writing style is one reason why the book is so captivating. He structures the book by first explaining why we should change the world, and then how “Earth is not just our home, it is also our house we don’t seem to be paying anywhere near enough attention to the deteriorating conditions of our home.” (1) When we think about our home, we think of a house or apartment that people live in. If it is on fire, we don’t just wait, we act fast to save the house. But we are not doing the same thing to Earth. Once the hook is stated, Nye states compelling ways to change the world such as using bubbles to slow global warming, “We call it whitewater. Bubbles in water produce a great many surfaces to reflect light the bubbles would also bounce just a little more sunshine away from our planet.” (56-57) He does a great job since it is very impacting to readers. Bill Nye also states actions we can take to bring such great results that we will want to do it. By using compelling language, it convinces us to take in the information to make us unstoppable.
Bill Nye also includes humor to keep readers interested and entertained. Although his jokes are merely puns and other funny statements, they hold the reader’s interest. On page 102, Nye wrote, “Not to make you uncomfortable, but they even checked our crotches for some kind of weapon...
