Adolescents and Depression

Depression is a common mental illness that changes the way people feel and act. Depression affects twenty percent of adolescents. The goal of this paper is to tell how adolescents develop depression, symptoms adolescents show when they’re depressed, how to take action to help adolescents with depression, as well as how to detect suicide warning signs in adolescents.
Adolescents develop depression in many ways. The first way that adolescents develop depression is being harassed or bullied, bullying has a very big effect on an adolescent's mind. Bullying tends to ruin an adolescent's self-esteem, this will make an adolescent feel bad about themselves and begin to hate things about themselves which will begin to make them depressions. The second way is problems at home, problems at home include things such as substance abuse, parental fighting, parental abuse, abuse on the adolescent, poverty, and homelessness. These all can cause an adolescent to feel hopeless, and as a nuisance, this is a huge factor into the adolescent becoming depressed because their will feel worthless to their parents or feel as if they’re causing a problem within their parent's relationship. The third way is relationships; there are many reasons why relationships can make an adolescent depressed starting with relationships becoming abuse whether it physically or verbally it can cause the adolescent on either end of the relationship to become depressed and feel worthless. Relationships can be dangerous if it becomes toxic and can lead to worse things than depression.
There are very many symptoms that adolescent when they become depressed. The first thing to look for is constant threats of suicide, this is a very concerning sign and should not be treated but should be taken as a serious warning sign and given immediate action. Suicide threats are the main verbal warning sign because it is the leading cause of death within adolescents.
