Life as a Single Child and Life with Siblings

It is well-known that family plays a big part in our lives. Your relatives are the first people you have contact with and are your first friends. There are different types of families in the world, for example, families that consist of only one child and a family that is formed by many siblings. Being a single child has some advantages such as full attention, the lack of necessity of sharing things and more money. On the other hand, being child that has brothers or sisters also has great advantages. There are many contrasting aspects of having a big family and being an only child.
First of all, the amount of attention received is different when you are a single child or a child with siblings. Single children are used to receiving all the attention from their parents most of the time. Their families only have them to take care of and are always preoccupied with their needs. However, all this attention can harm the child’s independence and privacy. In comparison, when children have siblings they learn from a young age that they need to share their parent’s attention with their brothers or sisters. This is not always enjoyable, but eventually, they learn that everything has its own time and they have the opportunity to become more independent and mature.
Secondly, the needing of sharing things is also different between these types of families. An only child is used to have everything for him or herself. They do not need to share their toys, clothes, and food. This could be a good thing, but at the same time, it could make the child a bit selfish and egocentric. On the other hand, kids with siblings have to share their belongings ever since they were little children. This sense of sharing is an important feature that can improve everyone’s character.
