Barbies and Gender Stereotypes

Gender roles are defined as behaviors of men and women that are generally considered acceptable and appropriate for a particular gender. Gender stereotyping has caused these roles to appear in American Society today. Created in 1959, toy doll Barbie is a perfect example of female stereotyping. Although the toy doll had seen many changes from when it was first released, the basic physique remains the same. Per Medical Daily Pulse, if Barbie were a real woman, she would stand six feet tall, have a thirty-nine-inch bust, weight a mere 100 pounds a nineteen-inch waist and have the hips of a boy that hasn’t hit puberty yet. The photo shown shows Barbie’s body compared to the body that of an average American woman.
These statistics show that the popular doll Barbie is setting completely unrealistic goals for little girls that play with her. These little girls think that she is perfect. Barbie was tall, skinny with blonde hair, blue eyes, a hot boyfriend and a perfect house, what little girl wouldn’t want to be her? Well those little girls aspiring to be her would never end up looking like her. Not naturally. When those little girls grew up, science smacked them right across the face. Achieving a body with the proportions that Barbie has isn’t scientifically possible. The only way for a girl to achieve a body that looks in any way like Barbie’s body either needs major plastic surgery or to look into a carnival mirror that distorts her body. Overall, our nation keeps getting fatter and fatter as years go on.
The ideas of the perfect female remain as Barbie, the scientifically impossible body to reach. This is a major problem in society today. Women believe that they have to look like Barbie to be accepted in the society of America today. This idea is problematic because women will save up thousands of dollars and drop it in an instant on plastic surgeries and other things to make themselves skinnier and prettier. Per the American...
