The Concept of Control in Macbeth

In the play, Macbeth by William Shakespeare, two characters who are in love fight for a place to be in control. Macbeth receives a prophecy from three witches that the throne would soon be his. As he is too eager to wait, he kills Duncan and becomes king. His guilt begins to take over him as he murders more and more innocent people. Although Lady Macbeth and Macbeth have control over some events in the play, the three witches have the most control over all the events that happen.
To start with, in the beginning of the play the witches started out with having control. Before Banquo and Macbeth enter the scene, the three witches had a plan to give Macbeth two prophecies. As Banquo and Macbeth enter the witches say “second witch: All hail, Macbeth! Hail to you Thane of Cawdor. Third witch: All hail, Macbeth, will be king later on!” (1.3.51-52). The witches are telling Macbeth what will happen in the future. There saying Macbeth will soon be Thane of Cawdor and King of Scotland. The prophecies the witches had given Macbeth all came true. This shows how the witches had control over an event that happened and were to come. Macbeth tries to take control of his own life but does not realize that the witches have all the control.
In addition, as the witches have control over Macbeth’s life they give him another prophecy as he went to go visit them. Macbeth over thinks about the prophecy that was given to Banquo about him being the father of a king. As Macbeth asks the witches to give him another prophecy the witches call in three apparitions. “First apparition: Macbeth, Macbeth, Macbeth! Beware of Macduff Second apparition: Macbeth, Macbeth no man born from to a woman can harm you Third apparition: Macbeth will never be defeated until the great Birnam woods marches to fight against him.” (4.1.78-103).
