How did the development of agriculture affect life in America? Many things resulted in the development of agriculture, but none of this would have happened if the natives would not have migrated.
Many thousands of years ago the Paleo-Indian were the first to migrate from Asia to the Western Hemisphere. They, unfortunately, were not able to go any further due to a sheet of ice about 8,000 feet thick. The second set of natives were the Na-Dene Indians followed about ten thousand years later was the Eskimo-Aleut. Apparently, these three groups of Indians combined created many different types of Indians.
Approximately, five centuries prior to the voyage of Christopher Columbus, the Vikings were the first to encounter Vinland. Lief Erikson founded a settlement on the Newfoundland off the coast of North America in 1000. They also called this newfound region Wineland due to all the wild grapes suitable for making wine. The Vikings had weapons of swords, axes, helmets, armor, and reindeer hide. Soon after their settlement, the Vikings encountered the Native Americans. The Vikings called the Native Americans Skraeling’s which meant little people. Soon after meeting them they became aware that they wanted their swords and axes. When the Vikings did not agree to give the Skraeling’s the items they requested they became angry. A fight broke out and the Skraeling’s stole the weapons from the Vikings causing them to abandon Vinland.
When the Ice Age ended the climate warmed up. This was when the Native Americans began to experiment with the growing of different crops, due to the increasing population. They grew different crops like squash and corn. These Native Americans were very good farmers. They raised turkeys and even pigs. The Native Americans regularly burned patches of land for pastures to keep the animals to graze. They also hunted deer for a source of food.
