Is Assisted Suicide Murder?

This case is about a man named “Kenneth Minor who was convicted of manslaughter after he stabbed a Long Island motivational speaker”, Jeffrey Locker. (Vaughn, 2016, p. 306) Kenneth’s defense was that it’s a suicide and not a murder because Jeffrey Locker paid him to help with his suicide.

Suicide
There are two types of suicide, physician-assisted and euthanasia. Assisted suicide is suicide done to another person with their permission, sometimes done by a physician. Physician-assisted is legal in Oregon, Vermont, Washington, and California. In Montana, it’s applied with court permission. The legality for this is based on the patient having a fatal illness or less than 6 months to live. In Oregon, it has to be an M.D. or D.O. and wants to do the act. In Vermont, only a doctor of medicine or osteopathy can write the prescription. In Washington, only a doctor of medicine or osteopathy can write the prescription and has to be willing to participate. In California, the patient must make two requests 15 days apart and write an request. In Colorado, the patient with 6 months or less can request to give the physician permission to give the medicine. Euthanasia is intentionally killing another person for his or her sake and there are five forms: Voluntary, Non-voluntary, Involuntary, Active, and Passive. Voluntary euthanasia happens when the person requests or agrees to the act. Non-voluntary happens when the person who’s killed has left no request and it’s left to the family to make the decision. Involuntary is when the person is killed but expressed a different wish to whatever happens to them. Active is directly killing someone. The fifth form is passive which is not providing essential life needs such as food and water.

Morality
