Studying Abroad and Student Success

Currently, studying abroad has become a widely discussed phenomenon in modern society. Fang et al. (2014, cited in Bodycott, 2016: 141) find that more and more students go abroad to study in order to seek the professional development of their studies and the preparation of career. However, some people think that learning at home can also increase students’ learning enthusiasm and learning ability (Soria and Troisi, 2013). This essay will argue that although long-term domestic education plays an important role in the whole learning career of students, it is not as beneficial as studying abroad, which can significantly improve the successful chances of most international students both in academic achievement and career achievement. In this essay, it will be analyzed from two aspects, academic and career success, and after that, the weaknesses of studying abroad are also discussed.
From the academic perspective, studying abroad significantly benefits students in this field. Firstly, based on the data shown in Nguyen (2012: 28) study, studying abroad has long-term benefits for academic achievement, eighty percent of participants indicate studying abroad can increase academic interest, eighty six percent think studying abroad can improve their English skills and eighty-seven percent explain that overseas studying become a foundation for the following education. Secondly, study abroad experience contribute to enhancing students critical thinking and creativity and the people who can create high-quality ideas must under the interaction of these two abilities (Nguyen, 2012: 30-32). This means that a person who can find connections and relationships in things and phenomena, produce new ideas and create new works is considered have creative ability and comprehensive critical thinking.
