Cancer and the Use of Radiation

5 Pages 1177 Words March 2018

Cancer has been known as the most common cause of death In the United States. Researchers have found studies showing that talking on cell phones for a long time can cause a brain tumor. The radiation from the cell phones is something that should be taken seriously, radiation can affect the health of many people, including the younger children who use their parent's phones from time to time. The government, including cell phone companies, are trying to find a better solution in order to improve the health of many people who are being exposed to the harmful radiation from the cell phones.
What is radiation? Radiation is an energy that can move through matter or space at very high speed. Radiation is found in X-ray, sunlight, microwaves, and radio waves, etc. There are two more common types of radiation: one being ionizing radiation and the second one being non-ionizing radiation. Ionizing radiation is described having high frequency since this type of radiation has a high energy it can damage our DNA cells which is what can lead to cancer. Non-ionizing radiation is known to be lower energy, even though it is lower frequency energy there has been a “study is part of a seven-year, $25 million effort conducted by the National Toxicology Program at the request of the Food and Drug Administration. It looked at the specific type of radiation that cell phones transmit, called non-ionizing radiofrequency. ‘This is the first study to actually show that non-ionizing radiation (causes) cancer,’ said Dr. Otis Brawley, the American Cancer Society's chief medical officer” (Tribune, 2016).
Even though non-ionizing radiation has low energy that it will not affect the DNA cells, there still have been studies that have found it could increase the chances of getting cancer. “The higher the exposure to the non-ionizing radiation emitted by the cell phones, the higher the risk of developing cancer” (White, 2017). The only reason as to why peo...
