Audience Relationships and the Construction of Soap Operas

In this episode of "East Enders," the audience attends one of East Enders' most iconic character’s funeral. In this episode, the audience is addressed by the different ways in which each character faces her loss and consequently the impact this has on their lives. As this is a soap opera, there are some other narrative strands which are made for regular viewers and former regular viewers to hook on. So, in this case, we can say that there are two intended audiences for this episode: Regular viewers who are concerned with previous narrative strands that evolve slowly through the episodes and former audiences who stopped watching at some point but now return because of the significance of the deceased character. In this sense, the narrative makes a reference to the former audience by the return of Simon´s character in the very end of the credits.
To analyze how is constructed the relationship between the audience and the soap opera we will pay attention to the Tv viewing schedule, the mise-en-scene, the camera work, the music and the sound. First, we have to take into account that most of the episode time happens in the evening which matches the broadcast schedule. In this sense, the audience gets a sense of immediacy. In the same way, the Tv viewing schedule is set up in the sense that there is no repetition of it or continuation, so there is only one way to know what happens in this week’s episode. The locations on this episode are set in familiar, common places. The pub, the street, the house are all places where people live their daily lives and where people usually interact with other people. As a consequence, this gives the viewers a sense of reality. No strange location would block that feeling of reality to the viewers. Also, the church and the cemetery is the most convenient place to set the funeral.
