Revenge in The Cask of Amontillado and A Rose for Emily

If you kill for revenge would that make you insane? Revenge is the action of inflicting hurt or harm on someone for an injury or wrong suffered at their hands. Insanity is known as the state of being mentally ill or unstable. In (Poe's) "The Cask of Amontillado" and in (Faulkner's) "A Rose for Emily" in both short stories the author's show us how revenge can drive a person crazy enough to commit a horrific crime.
"The Cask of Amontillado" takes place in the 1840's where in this time it was thought that mental illness was somehow related to immoral behavior. Some actions in this story take place in a dark and damp wine cellar surrounded by cavern walls, and echo's coming from the long dark hallway which at the end has plenty of small walls spaced crypts with bones lined on the walls stacked to the above vault. In "A Rose for Emily" the setting is quite different the society is divided mainly into two parts one for religion and the other for politics. It took place in a small old town, in her squarish framed house that had once been white decorated with a lightsome style of the 70's, and society at this time was much judgmental of everyone's business and personal life.
Montresor in the "The Cask of Amontillado" took his time to plot his revenge for all the injuries he bared from Fortunato, and even when he was fooling him into thinking he was going down to the wine cellar to taste wine he still tried to act as if he was doing nothing wrong. Montresor tells throughout the story how he took Fortunato down to the cellar and pushed him into a niche (in depth about 4 Ft, in width 3 Ft and in height 6 or 7 Ft) and chained him from his waist to two iron staples that were in tacked in the surrounding wall of granite. Montresor went among the pile of bones mentioned earlier and threw them aside uncovering a good amount of building stone and mortar to start building a wall at the entrance of the interior crypt which seemed to be made for no parti...
