“We are never going to get a serious grip on gun violence in this country until we adopt comprehensive measures to keep guns away from those who should not have them.” The Second Amendment gives people the right to bear arms, and in most cases, that right is used to do wrong. Each year almost 640,000 citizens face offenders armed with handguns in an attempted rape, assault, or robbery; more than 90,000 of these citizens are injured, and nearly 10,000 are killed (Kassier 25). Almost 20,000 people die in suicides committed with firearms each year. Since 1987, the murder rate reached a new record every year, increasing from 18,000 in 1987 to more than 23,000 in 1990 (Kassier 25). There should be stricter gun control laws in the United States due to the many deaths of gun-related homicide which has resulted from the unlawful use of guns and the ineffective gun control laws.
The central task of gun control laws is to reduce the hundreds of thousands of occasions each year when guns are used illegally without disrupting the cases where guns are used legally (Zimring 18). Americans own more firearms than citizens of any other western country and also uses their guns against one another much more often. The rising rate of crimes involving handguns has spurred, continuously rising levels of public support for tougher gun laws. In five states with relatively strict laws has a total gun homicide rate of 2.4 - 4.8 and five states with the weakest has gun homicide rates from 6.1 - 10.6 (Hofstadter 27). The positive effects of gun control depend mostly on the belief that laws can reduce the violent crime.
