Every year on October 8th, a national holiday is commemorated in the United States, in memory of a man known as Christopher Columbus. Columbus was a potent Italian voyager who is considered a great explorer and pioneer of the world to be celebrated, as he set en route to India under auspices of Spain, but instead was able to discover the Americas in 1942. Although his expeditions to the new world stimulated many ideas and experiences in the Americas, he was in fact proven to be a perpetrator of genocide, driven by a desire for gold, from which he enslaved the Native Americans which led to millions of deaths. Thus, Columbus day should not be celebrated.
At the outset, Christopher Columbus was considered influential, owing to the benefits the American Indians and the Europeans gained from his discoveries; many doors were opened for both societies. These benefits encompassed an interracial culture throughout Latin America that was developed to be present in the modern day; for instance, the majority of American Indians being converted to Christianity, as well as cannibalism and human sacrifice being obliterated from traditional rituals in the Americas. These achievements are significant as they still play an influential role in our society today. Another influence which is significant to an increasing extent is globalization, which is also present today. This comprises of the trade and interconnection throughout the world, between regions such as Mexico, Peru, and Venezuela. The Columbian exchange holds the roots of these nations, which triggered the arrival of Columbus in the Americas. Following the arrival of the Spanish, a great number of goods were introduced into the Americas and Europe. The goods introduced, namely plants, animals, and technology, changed both the culture and economy of the New and Old Worlds.
