The Historical Development of Affirmative Action in Sudan

ABSTRACT
Affirmative Action is an action that is aimed at bridging imbalances that is caused in society. First it begun in the USA, and then spread to the rest of the world, South Sudan as being one of the independent states also coined it in order that, its citizens enjoy equally life free from any discrimination. Affirmative action in South Sudan means actions for the emancipation of women, from socially, culturally economic and politically status that was created during the long decades of the war. This article is aimed at looking on the origin and when it was begun in Sudan and practicality and challenges of it from the CPA era to the creation of the 28 states.

INTRODUCTION
‘Affirmative action, the set of public policies and initiatives designed to help Eliminate past and present discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin, is under attack.1’ In South Sudan`s context, it is a measure that is aimed at emancipating women from past imbalances to meet the current culturally, socially, economic and politically development that condemned women just because of their gender. And such measures are capsulated in the Constitution, SPLM manifesto and other documents.

ORIGIN
The term Affirmative action was first used in the United States of America in the executive order No. 10925 Signed by President John F. Kennedy on March 6, 19612. As well as President Johnson when he signed the civil rights act of 1964.however it was broadened to include gender equality and diversity together with racial equality. Presidents Nixon and Carter issued similar executive orders for affirmative action but it was built on Kennedy's original guidelines .in the 1980s, there are anti-affirmative action movement in the United States of America but they failed to reverse the executive orders that was first set by President John F Kennedy.
