These African slaves were from Togo, Benin, Nigeria, and the kingdom of Dahomey. They introduced the practices of Voodoo to the people of Haiti. According to the Dahomey, Voodoo originates from the word ‘vodu’ which translates to spirit god. The African slaves’ religious culture entailed the worship of the spirits of their ancestor through song, drums, and dance in religious rituals. They also believed in possession of followers by immoral spirits. Voodoo religion the suitable conditions to flourish into a unique way of worship since Haiti was isolated from the rest. Once in Haiti, a new form of religion was formed by the slaves through their shared beliefs.
