The Fashion World of Manolo Blahnik

This study will explore the work of Spanish shoe designer Manolo Blahnik, arguably the world’s best designer of shoes in the 20th and the 21st century. His designs combine beauty and elegance with an everyday wearable comfort, as designer Isaac Mizrahi he concurs, stating “ Manolo Blahnik just means the happiest feet in the world.” (Manolo: The Boy who Made Shoes for Lizards, 2017). This particular shoe “Poison Ivy” was created by Manolo Blahnik in collaboration with fashion icon and Hip Hop, RnB singer, Rihanna, in their third and final “So Stoned” Collection.This design is for anyone looking for that edgy, empowering sensual feel. It demonstrates how Manolo is maintaining his position at the top by reinventing himself to appeal to a ever younger market whilst maintaining his established fan base and constantly associating himself with the world’s most glamorous influential people.
Born on the 27th November 1942 in Santa Cruz de la Palma in the Canary Islands, Blahnik lived with his Spanish mother and his Czechoslovakian father on their banana plantation along with his younger sister, Evangelina. His mother was very fashion forward and enjoyed buying clothes on shopping trips to places like Paris and Madrid. She would commission the local dressmaker on the island to copy styles from fashion magazines which she collected avidly. She also designed her own shoes and was certainly one of Blahniks original inspirations. (Gessner 2018).

Blahnik moved to Geneva at the age of fifteen to live with his father's cousin where he had his first experience of culture and high society.
