In many stories, the suspense is used to create greater interest for the reader. In the story “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, the main hero it is a hunter Rainsford who landed on the island and met with General Zaroff, he is waiting for a dangerous adventure, where he became prey. In the story” Click-Clack the Rattlebag” by Neil Gaiman. The main hero is a kid. He tells the scary story about a monster like a vampire that they take the people who do not pay attention. In both stories, the authors create a feeling of insecurity in the next events the help of foreshadowing and imagery. They use uncertainty to make stories more exciting and straightforward.
To begin the author of the Most Dangerous Game uses foreshadowing to help create the suspense. According to the book, page 5, "The old charts call it Ship-Trap island.” Whitney tells Rainsford about the mysterious island where the ships disappear. The sailors have some superstitions which are only intriguing. The author uses the suspense; he shows that he is not sure what is next to happen and he does not let the reader know more. Also, the quote “The animal had nothing but his legs and his instinct. Instinct is no match for a reason. When I thought of this, it was a tragic moment for me”. When the General says that he wants his game to be with a reasonable being, this leads us to the idea that Zaroff wants to hunt a human. But this foreshadowing shows and warns what can happen. Suspense gives us an anxious feeling. After the conservation, we understand that Zaroff is terrifying. The author creates tension in the text, and this adds anxiety.
In another story “ Click-Clack the Rattlebag”the author uses the literary technique of foreshadowing to create suspense. According to the book “Click-Clack the Rattlebag,” page 151, ”Then you can tell me a story before I go to sleep but probably should be a not scary story because I will be up in my bedroom then...
