3. Low Salary Correctional Officers are responsible for supervising individuals society did not find to be fit to function in society. That may be due to violence, mental illness, theft, sexual acts, etc. work in a vulnerable and potentially dangerous environment to protect the general public, but receive low salaries for the line of work they do. For example, the state of North Carolina's beginning salary is $32,000 for a correctional officer.

Safety concerns of the previously mentioned prison can be a dangerous environment, officers may begin work with a false expectation of the Prison culture, due to the media such as television shows. When some officers are exposed to the reality they reconsider their career, the salary along with the safety concern may not be worth it.
