Smoking is responsible for more than 1 in 5 deaths in the United States alone and is also currently the leading preventable cause of death. In an anti-smoking campaign photo, Quit Train, which is a Quit Smoking Support Organization, successfully manages to portray the dangers of continuous smoking by depicting an example of the ideal active-smoker and by using various elements to present the damage caused by it . The organization does this through taking into question an active smoker’s diminishing capabilities as well as health, instilling a fear of death in the active smokers as a result of smoking, and lastly by using different color tones and patterns to exemplify further the active smokers emotions and sentiments brought forth by continuous smoking.
In today’s society, most adults deem it imperative to uphold their self-images in the face of other individuals. Quit Train can directly question some of the active-smoker’s mental and physical capabilities by depicting the man in the image as a rather weak individual. The naked person in the photo, who is presented as an active-smoker, is in a kneeling down position on one knee and has only one of his hands planted on the ground. Furthermore, resting on the man’s naked back is an enlarged cigarette that seems to be pushing the man down toward the ground due to its weight. The organization uses the positioning of the man as a clear indication that individuals who smoke will most likely end up in the position of the man: in a place of sheer vulnerability. This is also visible in the decision to present the man while naked since being completely naked resembles the loss of a conceived protection against a threat and essentially portrays the active-smoker to be helpless.
